To help you out, our recruitment team have put together their top tips to help speed up your journey, and make sure you land that dream job faster than you can say ‘hired!’ Don’t forget to read our article on where to find fire and security jobs here.

  • Put together the perfect CV

One of the first things a recruiter will see about you is your CV, so it needs to be spot on. Make sure everything is spelled correctly, easy to read, and you have provided all your relevant qualifications, experiences and contact details. An example template can be found here. Recruiters don’t have much time, so make it as easy as possible for them to see you as the perfect candidate. You want your CV, and application as a whole, to mirror the job listing. While this can take some time to tailor your CV to each role, it will get you much closer to securing them. Something often overlooked is the importance of using keywords. Recruiters will scan a CV looking for keywords to jump out at them. Look carefully at the job listing and the company’s website for words that highlight what they’re looking for, such as characteristics like ‘flexible’, ‘driven’, ‘leadership’, ‘team player’, or technical requirements such as ‘communication skills’, ‘experienced’, ‘analytical’, or ‘management’.

  • Reach out in person

To make yourself stand out from the crowd of other applicants, give the company a phone call to talk about the job role, ask about the company, and ultimately show that you’re interested, motivated and a great communicator. Most applicants will simply fill out the application form and send off a CV, so if you can reach out to them personally, you’ll automatically set yourself apart.

  • Research the company

Don’t forget to have a thorough understanding of the company when looking to join their team. Not only will this help you understand what exactly the work will entail, and who you will be working with, this proves to employers that you’re genuinely interested in them, and committed to the role before you even start. Find out the company’s mission, values and culture – and if you can’t find anything? That gives you something great to ask them in person, either before you apply, or in an interview.
