BAFE Fire Safety Register Announces the Release of Version 8.0 of the SP203-1 Competency Scheme Document

In a comprehensive effort to enhance the fire safety landscape, the BAFE Fire Safety Register has unveiled Version 8.0 of its BAFE SP203-1 Competency Scheme Document. This document serves as a vital resource for professionals involved in the Design, Installation, Commissioning, and Maintenance of Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems, ensuring that they possess the necessary skills and expertise to perform these critical tasks.

The BAFE SP203-1 scheme plays a crucial role in providing independent evidence of competence among service providers engaged in the fire detection and fire alarm system domain. It emphasises the importance of maintaining the highest standards when it comes to design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance, to ensure the safety and security of individuals and properties.

“Empowering Excellence: Redefining Competency in Fire Safety”

Notably, the latest update of the BAFE SP203-1 Scheme Document reflects the evolving landscape of competency requirements in the field. Taking into account the influence of documents like the BSI Flex 8670, which outlines core criteria for building safety in competence frameworks, the new version incorporates recommendations for enhancing skills, knowledge, experience, and behaviours. These changes make the competency requirements for individuals involved in fire detection and fire alarm work more explicit.

One significant development in the document is the introduction of nominated Lead Individuals for each module, covering design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance. These Lead Individuals are expected to meet heightened competency criteria, ensuring their suitability to oversee and support an organisation’s management system in relation to their scope of work.

Matt Darville, Chair of the BAFE SP203-1 Monitoring Committee, noted, “This has been an extensive process to review the document appropriately, considering both our desires to clarify requirements and the comments and feedback from multiple participants of the Monitoring Committee. The updates made to the BAFE SP203-1 Scheme Document are sensible but raise the competency bar for all relevant individuals employed by an organisation that delivers fire detection and fire alarm work. We trust that this is still very much achievable, and it continues to demonstrate the best possible objective evidence of competency to deliver this work.”

Lewis Ramsay, BAFE Board Director, added, “The work performed by BAFE and the SP203-1 Monitoring Committee has been a substantial undertaking, with an improved document as a result. The current landscape of the fire industry is changing at a rapid pace, and we appreciate that keeping up with all of this is no easy feat. The Responsible Person, Duty Holder, premises manager needs to demonstrate their actions in meeting their fire safety obligations. The BAFE Schemes exist for the industry to demonstrate their capability, and third-party certification towards these Schemes can be a clear differentiator to anyone looking to employ the services of an organisation providing life safety works.”
