How to Clean a CCTV Camera Lens?

The security system in your house or business is an investment: you put money into it to protect your valuables. If you’ve ever had closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed around your home or business, you’ll understand how ineffective they are if the lens is smudged or dirty. A smudged or dirty lens distorts the view, making it hard to spot intruders.

Many security installation firms offer maintenance support, and CCTV engineers will clean the lenses during the preventive maintenance visit. Let’s see how to clean security camera lenses. Removing the cover can cause problems with the camera’s performance, thus it should only be done by a trained professional following the manufacturer guidelines.

Take care not to harm the unique coating that prevents light reflection while cleaning your CCTV lens.

The following instructions will show you how to clean the lens without damaging it.

Step 1

In order to clear any loose dirt or debris from the lens, blow air at it using a compressed air can. If you remotely move your CCTV camera to cover an area (motion detection), you must cut off the camera’s power in order to keep the camera station. You can spray the lens while the camera is mounted.

Step 2

Wipe the lens carefully with a microfiber cloth, which can be purchased at a pharmacy or an eye-wear store. These clothes are smooth and will not remove the protective coating on the CCTV lens.

Step 3

Wipe the CCTV lens down gently with a microfiber cloth and a small dab of CCTV cleaner. Contact your local security dealer to find cleaner options.

Step 4

As an alternative to using CCTV cleaner, breathe onto the lens and gently wipe it with the microfiber cloth. Smudges and dirt should be removed by moisture.

Security cameras, especially those mounted outside, should be cleaned regularly. If you find it difficult to clean them, you should enter into a maintenance agreement with a CCTV installation company that will clean them for you.
