The importance of a good access code when having installed a brand new access control system into your home, workplace etc. is very prominent. The safety and security of your property will be determined for the most part by this code so here are just a few tips and tricks that can help you avoid losing that security when deciding on your door access code.

Importance of the Code

As much as this is said by many, it is so crucial that you choose a code that would not be easily guessed. If someone were to break in due to a weak access code, any sensitive information that you have the intruders will then have access to. Valuables could be stolen from your premises and this is something that no one wants to happen.

Things to Avoid

Some specific choices in access codes should be avoided. Here are just a few to name:

  1. Sequential Numbers – using a code such as 1234 is very popular and naturally easy to guess so this is one to avoid.
  2. Your Birthday – Many intruders are aware that birthdays are typically used for codes and so avoiding these at all costs would be beneficial for you.
  3. Any Other Personal Information – information such as the end of a phone number, a street address, or other personal attachments to you should not be used in this instance.

Tips to Ensure a Secure and Safe Code

Words to Numbers

Something that you could do would be to associate a 4 or 6 letter word with a number code equivalent. This makes it a lot harder for an intruder to guess this code. Numbers representing letters make decoding a lot more difficult to decipher.

Shapes

Selecting numbers in the order of a shape is crucial and beneficial to helping create a secure password. For example, creating a C using the numbers ‘21478’ or an X using the numbers ‘159357’.

Meaningful Dates

Although birthdays are to be typically avoided, there are other significant dates that may be personal to you such as the year that your favourite football team was founded. These must be easy to remember for you but will inevitably be harder for intruders to work out.

Acronyms

Acronyms are a great way to create a secure access code. Finding an acronym that you know well and is again easy to remember will ensure more safety. Examples of 4-word acronyms that could be used include;

  • None Of Your Business – NOYB – 5591
  • You Only Live Once – YOLO – 9545
  • As Soon As Possible – ASAP – 1716
