Lets see how a circuit works, there are many instances where we may come a cross an electrical circuit. For example, flash light. When a switch is pressed, the circuit will be completed and this allows the current to flow. When a switch is not pressed, the circuit will be short circuited and the current will not flow and your flash light will not work.

Following the above example we can replace the flash light with a door magnet. When the door is closed the circuit will be completed and the alarm panel will know that the circuit is closed. When opening the door, magnet will be separated from the door contact this will short circuit the circuit. And the current will not flow, therefore panel knows that the door is opened.
