One of the latest technology advancements in security is the face recognition found in access control and door entry systems. These can be used in many different ways. A few to name include:

  • Unlocking your mobile phone
  • Authenticating contactless payments
  • Speeding up airport border controls
  • Hands-free face recognition for door entry

Now that we are growing into a contactless digital world, this opportunity to allow for new and secure buildings in order to help prevent the spread of any infections and viruses.

How Does It Actually Work?

In order for face recognition based access control to work, a face scan or photograph of the face will be required. The access control system will then use AI algorithms to convert the image of the face into coordinates to pinpoint facial features specific to each individual. This will then create a unique set of numbers which is stored in the system’s database. That way there is compliance with personal data storage privacy rules of GDPR.

The system will use access control end-points which feature high resolution, integrated cameras in order to provide a live face scan of an individual at the gate or door. To authenticate, the system will match the unique face coordinates to those that are stored on the database.

The Benefits

Some of the benefits of face-recognition based access control software include:

  • Improved Security: Facial recognition provides a much safer and more accurate authentication in comparison to more traditional methods to access places such as keyfob or PIN code door entry.
  • No Authentication Device Required: Many identification methods require a physical device to authenticate such as a mobile phone. If that device got lost, then access to the building would be gone. Face recognition authentication however does not require this.
  • Hands-free User Authentication: Touch-free user experiences are now much higher in demand due to expansion in working spaces as well as the Coronavirus pandemic which ultimately has increased the requirement for contactless environments.
  • Management of User ID’s: The addition and removal of user accounts can be controlled much easier and simpler for system administrators and are able to be managed remotely. Cloud-based management platforms are used which significantly speed up the process, saving time and money.
  • Other Platforms’ Integration: Access control systems can be integrated with other system platforms for example automatic payment systems, building management systems and time and attendance. This naturally helps develop smarter building environments.
