Day in the life of a CCTV engineer
Stephen – CCTV engineer
When you think of what a CCTV engineer does on a daily basis, what comes to mind?
Most of us think that a CCTV engineer install and commission all day? Maybe some of us think they drive a van and install CCTV systems all day long.
We got the opportunity to follow Stephen, a CCTV engineer works in London. Stephen starts his day very early, he wakes up at 5 am and by 7 am he receives his day plan from the head office. He checks his PDA to make sure that he now knows where to go first and plan his day.
He drives to South East of London to a doctor’s surgery, where they have been experiencing issues with CCTV cameras. The brief message that Stephen received just say that ‘cameras not working’.
As an experienced CCTV engineer always make sure that he carries all his tools, he checked the camera’s power first and follows his check list. It was initially unclear what was causing the problem but then with his experience he figured it out that they had a malfunctioning power supply. He then updates his PDA and let head office know what should be done. Once he gets the approval, he then replace the power supply with a brand new one.
Now its 10.30 am. he checks his next job which is at East London. He heads toward black wall tunnel and it was not a good news, one lane blocked and traffic queuing and causing delays. He then calls head office and informed them about the situation.
Finally arrived at East London and no where to park, he some how finds a place to park. This time he has been asked to conduct a site survey for a CCTV installation. He talks to client in a friendly way and gather information about CCTV installation. After making sure that he has gathered all information required, he leaves the place and drops his business card with the client.
He takes sometime to update the survey via his PDA as head office needs it urgently to prepare a quotation. He also speaks to his colleague at head office explaining what client was expecting.
The next job is to oversee a group of people who are installing a CCTV system at Brixton, he then heads to Brixton and check all cables are in place for second fix.
That’s come to an end of a busy day of a CCTV engineer and he drives back to office to report to his manager and update him about all latest developments.
