Trying to work out whether or not you should stay in your industry is a difficult task. One of the big questions that every security alarm subcontractor faces is whether or not they should stay in their role as a subcontractor or seek full-time employment within their industry.
Recently, I was told a story that is particularly relevant to this conundrum, and I thought I would share it with all of you, because it’s important to realise that sometimes, while a full-time position might seem potentially alluring, it’s not always the best decision.
A Crucial Decision
Our story begins with an alarm engineer that I met a few years ago. This Security Alarm engineer has spent the last four years installing security alarm systems as a subcontractor for a certain contractor. While it was paying quite well, he wasn’t necessarily satisfied with the contractor. He wanted to think about making a change and exploring his options, so I stepped in to help.
So, we did eventually manage to secure this man a job offer. However, it comes with a handful of considerations. First of all, it doesn’t pay quite as much as what he earns now, but it is an offer which comes from a very reliable, reputable security alarm company, and there are plenty of opportunities for training and growth.
What to Do For the Best?
Understandably, this gentleman is on the fence with regards to what he should do. I can’t say I’m surprised, because it’s a big decision to make, and there are definitely pros and cons to both.
If you choose to commit to working a full-time job, the new limit, your freedom and earning potential. You become a salaried worker, which does guarantee you a regular wage, but at the same time, means that you aren’t as free to pursue the projects that appeal to you most.
Understandably, the immediate reduction in wage was something that gave this man pause. He didn’t necessarily want to take a pay cut, but the opportunity to work his way back up to his regular salary was there. However, the loss of his freedom to pick and choose his own projects was also something that factored into whether or not he took the job offer.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, what I’m trying to say here is that there is no real way to determine ahead of time. What the best decision for you will be when it comes to choosing to remain as a security alarm subcontractor or take a job with an alarm company as a worker. It’s really down to your professional and personal goals as to which of the two options you go for, so I would definitely recommend experimenting with some of the different offers that are out there.
