The CCTV Fire and Security industry can be an exciting new venture for someone looking to start out in their electrical career. Now the most important thing to consider is how can this be done?
Where to Start
If you are a school leaver, many people will opt to go to college and take a Level 3 course such as Level 3 Diploma in Providing Electronic Fire and Security Systems and Level 3 Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Another alternative to that is an advanced apprenticeship in security systems.
As well as this, if you are looking to change and progress into a new career, you can directly apply to employers if you have the relevant skills and knowledge that are required for the job.
You could also study with a private training organisation. Private providers can be found through the National Security Inspectorate and British Security Industry Association.
What You Will Need
Some of the skills and knowledge that you will need include:
- customer service skills
- the ability to work on your own
- knowledge of public safety and security
- problem-solving skills
- practical skills for installing equipment
- to be thorough and pay attention to detail
- to be flexible and open to change
- broadcasting and telecommunications knowledge
- to be able to use a computer and the main software packages competently
Restrictions and requirements that you will need include:
- Passing security checks
- Having a full driving license
What the Job Entails
Day to day responsibilities include:
- Carrying out site surveys
- Testing systems, finding faults and fixing them
- Servicing existing systems
- Discussing security plans with customers
- Installing security systems, like building access controls, fire and intruder alarms and electronic surveillance equipment
- Showing customers how to use their security equipment
- Responding to call-outs to repair faulty systems
You could be working at a client’s home or at a client’s business. As well as this, your working environment may be outdoors some of the time and potentially at a height.
Progressing Into Your Career
With experience, you could become an installation, sales or maintenance team supervisor. As well as this, another alternative route could involve designing new security systems or setting up your own security systems company.
